The bucket vs. The tub

A few months back, I was on the MySpace page for the California Honeydrops, whose bass is a 5-gallon paintbucket they have branded "The Soul Tub." I have nothing to do with that band, by the way. But I was impressed by both of the people I saw play it in their posted videos. It sounded pretty great, and the confident control they had with it -- seeming to know exactly what note they would get in every position on the neck -- caught my interest.

So I went out and bought a bucket, two rope clamps, an eyebolt and three nuts/bolts. I had an unused mop handle and a lot of nylon parachute cord left over from my washtub build. After $9.83 and about 30 minutes of labor, I had a paintbucket bass. (I should mention that the 30 minutes was unnecessarily long; I'm extremely, embarrassingly un-handy.)

I have since built a total of 3 bucket basses, and I gotta tell ya: I've been very close to declaring their superiority to the washtub. I've made several recordings using both the washtub and the paintbucket, and I've got pros and cons for each.

What I like about the paintbucket is that it's much, much cheaper to build. It's also featherweight in comparison to the tub and far easier to lug around. And because the neck is fixed, you can actually fret it and have more control. Most importantly, it sounds great. A very authentic "homemade" sound. I've had friends comment about the bass sound on recordings. (They're usually incredulous when I tell them it's a standard 5-gal paintbucket.)

The downside is that it seems to be an ergonomic nightmare. A few recording takes is all I can stand; the fretting actually begins to hurt my hand. I wouldn't want to try to play a whole gig with it. In fact, the paintbucket became the main bass in my jug band... until our bassist (paintbucket-ist?) started having nerve/carpal tunnel-like problems with his fretting hand.

Also, as you might guess, the paintbucket doesn't make as big or as low a noise as the tub. On recordings, I can dial up the low frequencies on the EQ to give it the bigger presence and warmth that the tub has. The bucket's notes also have a nice, fast decay whereas the washtub has more a sustained, mushy sound.

But, it's still a toss-up for me. I'm happy to have both instruments, and I expect they'll both continue to get good use. For the investment and the easy build, I recommend checking it out. At the very least, youtube or google the California Honeydrops and see what you think of their paintbucket bass. (Again, no affiliation with that band.)

Hi folks,

Inspired by the awesome annual event in Minneapolis, I'm trying to start a Battle of the Jug Bands tradition here in Chicago. Our first running will be next month: Saturday, Nov. 8 at a bar called Morseland at 1218 W. Morse Ave. The lineup includes:

Strictly Jug Nuts (Chicago)
The Geezers (Minneapolis)
Blue Ribbon Jug Band (Chicago)
Bare Hand Jug Band (Chicago)
Fat Chance Jug Band (Minneapolis)
Hump Night Thumpers (Chicago)
Escape the Floodwater Jug Band (Iowa City)

The winner will be decided by an audience vote and, as a tribute to our local culinary heritage, will receive an antique sausage press as a traveling trophy.

We'll have a dinnertime show by one of Chicago's best roots bands, Devil In a Woodpile, at 7:00 ... the battle at 9:00 ... and an open jam around midnight. The lineup is full, but if you're in the area, please come enjoy the event and then stick around for the jam!

Cheers,
